Why Do Video Game Movies Suck? Worst Movies Based on Video Games | Flick Connection

Why do video games movies suck? All of them, without exception? What are the worst movies based on video games? Every year we gt a new crop of bad video game movies and Hollywood has yet to figure out how to make these movies work. In my assessment there are three key elements that cause these movies to flop every single time.

High expectations from the gamer community set up these movies for failure to begin with. Then, combine that with non gamer filmmakers and the fact that video games are a difficult medium to translate to film. Because video games are often from a first person perspective, it’s difficult to swing that point of view into traditional filmmaking. You are the main character, an element that cannot exist in a movie.

The Super Mario Brothers movie is infamously bad, in fact it’s so bad and so far from representing the beloved game it’s almost good again in it’s own way. Most recently the Assassins Creed movie flopped despite top tier actors and a director with a good track record. If gamers are lucky, the Uncharted series might actually get made into a good Uncharted movie. Creator Neil Druckmann might also be set to direct a The Last of Us Movie. He was the writer and creative director for both of those games, some of the best in the past decade. Both have been slated to become epic movies, but are slow to production which may be a sign they are going to make them the right way by keeping them faithful to the source material.
