China News Today: “Step down (President Xi Jinping); Don’t want Covid test, want freedom”; “Opposition to dictatorship!”; “We don’t want lifelong rulers”.

Searing public anger has spilled into the streets across China, as people raise slogans against the President and call for freedom – not just from Covid restrictions but political rulers as well.

Many demonstrators have been holing blank pieces of paper and bundles of chrysanthemum to vent their “silent” discontent. The rallies and protests had earlier largely been concentrated in the capital Beijing and the financial hub of Shanghai. They have spread like wildfire to Chengdu, Guangzhou, Urumqi, Nanjing, and Wuhan. In Wuhan, people smashed barricades, brought down Covid tents and demanded an end to Covid restrictions on Saturday.
