Dealing with Underperformers and Other Difficult Employees

How to determine why an employee is underperforming in this week’s Leading with IMPACT: Dealing with Underperformers and Other Difficult Employees

Transcript:
Every workplace has difficult employees. Under-performers and high-maintenance employees test your leadership. Before their behavior ruins morale … intervene honestly, respectfully and most of all, right away. First, determine whether their issue is a matter of “skill or will.”
• If an employee is underperforming, is it because they genuinely can’t do the standard of work required? If so, training or coaching may be the answer.
• If it’s not a “skill” issue, it’s likely a “will” issue. This employee knows how to do the job but chooses not to. In that case, talk through the behaviors and specific instances that that aren’t hitting the mark.
Work together to draft a performance improvement plan.
